Michigan
continues to be one of the largest producers of Christmas trees
with more than four million trees expected to be harvested this
year. One million will stay in the state and the others will be
exported across the U.S. and to several foreign countries. Our
unique growing climate allows Michigan growers to produce
numerous varieties of trees in order to better serve the
consumer. Scotch, White and Austrian Pine; Douglas, Fraser,
Canaan, Concolor and Balsam Fir; Blue, Norway and White Spruce
are among the popular species currently produced for the fresh
Christmas tree market.
More and more families are discovering the fun and
adventure of cutting their own Christmas tree — a fresh,
fragrant, high quality tree, that can not be found
elsewhere.
Choose & Cut farms open around Thanksgiving and will sell
most of the year's crop in the next two weekends while
weather and roads are better.
When properly cared for, real Christmas trees can last in
the home from Thanksgiving through New Year's. Upon arriving
home, immediately set the tree in a stand holding from one
to three gallons of water. Trees are thirsty. They may drink
between two to four pints of water per day. If you allow the
water level to drop below the end of the trunk, a seal will
form, and the tree will stop drinking water. A new cut will
be necessary to make it take water again. Be sure to check
daily and supply water as needed for a long-lasting happy
holiday.
The members
of the Michigan Christmas Tree Association wish you a safe and
beautiful holiday season. Thank you for choosing a REAL Christmas tree as the
centerpiece of your Christmas celebration.
